Description from the seller

Original Vintage Photograph – Cointreau Advertisement, France, 1970s

A striking and sophisticated original authentic darkroom print from a Cointreau advertising campaign, photographed in the grounds of a renowned country lodge in the United Kingdom during the 1970s. The scene unfolds with cinematic confidence: two elegantly dressed figures seated in a secluded garden, glasses gently raised in conversation, suspended in a moment of effortless elegance, quiet luxury, and lingering allure.

Rich in texture, tone and theatricality, the composition rewards prolonged viewing. Ornate ironwork, flourishing foliage, patterned fabrics and the unmistakable Cointreau bottle combine to create a carefully choreographed tableau, where every detail contributes to the story. The result captures the style, sophistication and sensuality that defined the golden age of European advertising.

Printed in the period, this is an original vintage darkroom photograph, not a later reproduction. The photographer's handwritten annotation on the mount confirms both its provenance and its date. Beautiful tonal depth, crisp contrast and the subtly tactile surface speak to the craftsmanship of traditional silver-gelatin printing.

More than an advertising image, it is a beautifully composed work of photographic art, balancing fashion, fantasy and finesse with Michael Joseph's characteristic flair for staging memorable scenes.

Photo taken: 1970s

Medium: Original vintage photographic print

Mount dimensions: 70 cm high × 50 cm wide

Condition: Very good vintage condition, with light age-related wear consistent with its history and originality.

A rare and evocative survivor from the golden era of European commercial photography, equally compelling as a standalone statement piece or as part of a collection celebrating mid-century modern design, vintage advertising and photographic history.

This is a unique, one-off historical work. It will be meticulously wrapped, carefully protected and securely dispatched with the respect due to an original vintage photograph of this rarity.

Seller's Story

My father, Michael Joseph, was a London-based advertising photographer from the mid-1960s to the early 1990s. Over those decades, he produced an extraordinary body of work—his most widely recognised image being the iconic Beggars Banquet gatefold for the Rolling Stones. My ongoing mission is to share and celebrate what we call “the other photos”: the lesser-known but no less compelling images from his archive. These are the works that lived beyond the headlines—test prints, alternative frames from major shoots, and quieter, more personal photographs, all made with his characteristic intensity, discipline, and devotion to craft. Much of their atmosphere comes from the darkroom itself. These are photographs shaped by light, timing, and handwork: intricate group compositions, sculptural still lifes, and moments that invite the viewer to linger and look again. Variety is central to the archive, and I frequently offer unique, one-off pieces that exist nowhere else. I hope you enjoy discovering my father’s work as much as I enjoy sharing it, and that you find here not just an image, but a genuine piece of photographic history. All works are dispatched carefully protected, and packed with devotion and care, appropriate to a one-off historical photographic print. US purchasers please note: Customs and excise charges are paid at source and included in the postage fee. No further charges should be due on delivery, unless regulations change.
