Norman painter born in 1924, Claude Gaignoux established himself as one of the region’s most sensitive artists to the light of the ports and maritime landscapes. Having settled permanently in Normandy, he developed a body of work where port scenes, the shores of the English Channel, seascapes and changing skies prevail. His style, at once sober, luminous and deeply atmospheric, favors soft harmonies and balanced compositions.
Gaignoux regularly exhibited in Norman galleries and participated in several regional salons, where his work is appreciated for its accuracy of observation and its sense of pictorial stillness. His canvases, often imbued with discreet poetry, appeal to lovers of figurative painting attached to coastal landscapes. He died in 2005, leaving a cohesive, elegant oeuvre sought after by collectors of Norman painting of the 20th century.
