This painting is a Thangka depicting the Buddhist deity Avalokiteshvara (Chenrezig), the embodiment of ultimate compassion and mercy. His eleven faces allow him to see and hear the suffering of the world in all directions at once. The layered faces show both peaceful and wrathful expressions to overcome obstacles, with at the top his spiritual teacher Buddha Amitabha. With his eight arms and the sacred objects he holds, he offers active protection and spiritual aid to all living beings.
