Description from the seller
There Can Be Only One in the World - Edition 1/1
With this square-format work, Medsan invokes the genius of engraver Gustave Doré to give Godzilla the look of a romantic nineteenth-century engraving. The legendary kaiju rises from a raging sea, beneath a sky jagged with lightning pierced by beams of divine light, while a tiny crowd flees along the shore rocks. All of it imitates the page of an old book, signed “G. Doré” and stamped with the cartouche “メドサン” (Medsan). This single print makes the Japanese monster emerge in European Biblical imagery.
The visual impact of the composition lies in its meticulously imitated wood engraving technique: tight hatching, dramatic contrasts of black and white, and that sense of catastrophic sublimity typical of Doré’s illustrations for the Bible or Dante’s Inferno. The foam, the clouds, and the celestial light are rendered with astonishing graphic virtuosity.
The work’s impact comes from this telescoping of registers: the monster of 20th-century pop culture treated as an apocalyptic apparition from an ancient print. Godzilla, born of nuclear anxiety, joins the long line of divine plagues and cataclysms that Doré photographed so well. The modern myth ennobled as a print from antiquity.
A graphic, spectacular, and refined piece, ideal for adding a dramatic, timeless, and distinctly original touch to a collector’s interior — a favorite with fans of antique engraving as well as monster cinema.

About the Atelier:
Atelier Joconde is a studio of artists gathered around a living and plural contemporary creation. Set up as a genuine center of artistic production, the studio operates both in collective creation and in individual approaches, depending on projects and works. Atelier Joconde is also a family venture. Le Yack, a contemporary figurative painter, develops a narrative and introspective body of work with cinematic and realistic influences. At his side, Medsan, oriented toward pop art painting, explores color, modern iconography, and visual culture. Finally, Neo Pablo engages in a more instinctive search, blending abstract art, outsider art, and figurative abstraction. Each work is conceived, created, and supervised within the studio, with a shared artistic standard and an identity unique to each artist.
