The body of the young woman on the stairs of a townhouse is revealed more than it is veiled by her light dress. In an almost provocative pose, she gazes into the sun. Curtains fluttering in the wind through an open window lend dynamism to the painting’s bright architectural geometry and reveal — just like the entrance to the house — a dark space inside.

As Hopper’s preparatory studies show, the curtains with their sexual connotation only appear in the final painting. The painting’s inner dynamic, fed by the interaction between the interior space and the phallic pillars, transforms the composition into a phantasmagoric construct. Therein, longing and promise, challenge and surrender are directly translated into spatial imagery.

Where Hopper’s other paintings depict the boundaries between nature and civilization, this work focuses on the limits imposed on the body in the process of civilization.
