Maurice Lévis (1860‑1941) was a French painter and watercolorist whose work sits between naturalist landscape, Barbizon heritage, and Orientalism. Born in Paris on November 11, 1860, he was the son of painter Juliette Lévis and trained with recognized masters such as Henry Harpignies, Jules Lefebvre, and Pierre Billet.
He exhibited as early as 1888 at the Salon des Artistes Français, where he received an honorable mention (1895), a third-class medal (1896), and a gold medal in 1927. His work, nourished by his travels in Africa and the Indian Ocean, reveals a marked taste for distant lights and scenes of life observed during his travels, placing him in the Orientalist movement.
A painter of seashores, French countryside, and travel landscapes, Lévis left behind an abundant body of work, sensitive to atmospheres and to changes in light. He died in Paris on January 31, 1941, and is buried in the Montmartre Cemetery.
