Antique Swiss Carved Wooden Pocket Watch Stand, Velvet Lined, c. 1900
Antique carved wooden pocket watch stand or holder, with a red velvet-lined circular compartment from Montreux, Switzerland.
The front bears a carved inscription which appears to read “MONTREUX”, referring to the well-known Swiss town on Lake Geneva. The object was designed to hold and display a small to medium pocket watch in an upright position. The circular velvet-lined opening supports the watch, while the chain can remain outside.
The stand is made of carved and stained wood, decorated with floral motifs, small star-like details and geometric folk-style carving. The ornamentation, the edelweiss-like flowers and the Montreux inscription suggest a Swiss / Alpine souvenir piece, dating from the early 20th century.
The construction is compact and box-like, with a sliding/display form. The interior is lined with red velvet, showing age-related wear. The exterior has a warm brown patina, with visible signs of age, use, small scratches, losses to the finish and surface wear, all consistent with an antique wooden object.
