Herman BIELING (Rotterdam 1887 - Rhoon 1964)

Bieling followed his training at the Academy of Visual Arts in Rotterdam. Later he became a member and co-founder of the avant-garde group De Branding. This grouping aimed at the 'bourgeois mediocrity' of what was generally on display at exhibitions at the time. In that period he mainly produced Cubist works, with landscapes, still lifes and people as his primary subjects. Bieling lived and worked as a sculptor, graphic artist, draftsman and painter in the Netherlands, Belgium, France, Spain, Germany and England. His work is represented in the collections of the Boijmans Van Beuningen Museum, the Municipal Museum The Hague, the Stedelijk Museum Schiedam and the Centraal Museum Utrecht.
