Description from the seller
Monopusher “return-to-zero” wrist chronograph, produced by Leonidas in 1942 and used by on-board personnel with bombing duties. The chronograph dial features a bi-directional rotating bezel connected to a yellow triangular index. The hand controlled by the crown at 2 o’clock advances, stops, and returns backward on each press, performing a countdown. The button at 2 o’clock for return was used by bombers performing a second “pass.” Internally there is a scale for flight altitudes, measured in hectometers (hm).
Fully functional in all its parts and mechanisms.
The watch in question comes from a private collection of a Regia Aeronautica pilot (see photo).
Case diameter: net 50 mm (53 mm to the case back – 57 mm bezel width).
Leonidas Company: The company was founded in 1841 by Leonida Bourquin Julien in Saint-Imier. It built many instruments used in automotive and aviation fields and produced exceptional chronograph calibers and second counters during the World War II period. In 1964 Leonidas merged with Heuer, which later became Tag Heuer, with the Leonidas brand ceasing to exist.
