Description from the seller
Photograph of Marc Simon
Portrait of sculptor César at his home
Color print in 30 × 40 format
Marc Simon is an important figure in French press photography, better known as a photo editor and head of the photo service at VSD than as a photographer-artist.
Parcours
From 2000 to 2018, Marc Simon headed the photo department of the magazine VSD, where he supervised the selection, editing and publication of numerous photographic reports. In this role, he contributed to the magazine's visual identity, prioritizing demanding photojournalism focused on the power of storytelling through images.
After leaving VSD, he continued his activity in the world of photography as:
president of the jury for the Mark Grosset–SAIF Prize of Promenades Photographiques;
secretary-general of the International Center for Research in Political Imaging (CIRIP);
member of the board of Promenades Photographiques and lecturer in photography.
His work as a photographer
Marc Simon has also produced reports for VSD, notably portraits of personalities and current affairs topics. Some of his photographs are today offered on the collectors' market. Among them is a silver gelatin print made in 1984 depicting Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin aboard the frigate Guépratte during a report for VSD.
Importance
If Marc Simon is less well known to the general public than some photojournalists, he played a major role in the diffusion of documentary photography in France. His influence rests as much on his work as a photographer as on his role as an editor, having accompanied several generations of photojournalists and contributed to making VSD one of the great French illustrated magazines from the 1980s to 2010.
