Impressionistic park terrace, an oil painting on canvas from Belgium, dated 1940–1950, sold with frame.
Description from the seller
Impressionist park terrace
Oil on canvas – ca. 1935-1950
Based on the photos I see no legible signature, neither on the front nor on the back. The backside shows a solid, but not unusually old linen canvas on a wooden stretcher with no gallery labels or atelier stamps. Therefore, at present a certain attribution to an artist is not possible.
Stylistically there is a lot that can be said.
Description
The painting depicts an elegant terrace in a park or city garden where a few ladies and visitors sit relaxed at tables. In the foreground a woman in a light summer dress walks by, while around her tall trees and classical lampposts provide an atmospheric background. The loose brushwork, warm sunlight and attention to atmosphere give the work a pronounced impressionistic look.
The painter worked with broad, confident strokes where not the details, but light, color and mood are central. Especially the combination of dark tree masses with the sunny terrace betrays a painter who was familiar with the impressionist painting method.
Probable period
Based on:
the clothing of the depicted figures;
the painting technique;
the canvas and the stretcher;
the composition;
I estimate that the work probably originated between ca. 1925 and 1955, with the highest probability around 1935-1950.
Possible provenance
The atmosphere strongly resembles:
Belgian impressionists;
French post-impressionists;
Dutch painters from the Hague School and Amsterdam School who continued to work in an impressionistic style.
The subject – a park terrace with elegant visitors – is common among Belgian and French painters from the first half of the twentieth century. Without a signature, further attribution is however speculative.
Value
Because the artist is unknown, the value is mainly determined by quality.
Expected yield
Catawiki
€200 – €400
with an attractive presentation: €400 – €600
Gallery value
approximately €500 – €900
(No shipping to overseas territories.)
