Description from the seller
Decorative panel with a chivalrous love scene – a couple on horseback with a bird/falcon – based on a medieval example
Beautiful decorative panel depicting a noble love couple on horseback. The man and woman are depicted in rich clothing; the woman holds a bird or falcon on her hand, a motif that strongly refers to medieval courtly love and knightly representations.
The composition evokes the language of imagery from the courtly culture, as known from medieval manuscripts including the Codex Manesse: a world of knightly love, status, courtesy, and symbolism. The execution is folk-art-like and expressive, with bright colors, simple contours, and decorative raised lines.
The panel is a decorative object with a medieval-inspired representation. Probably European, presumably 20th century or later.
Condition: clear signs of age and use, craquelure, wear to the paint layer and edges, small damages to the panel. These contribute to the lived-in, antique character of the object. See photos for a good impression of the state.
