Aldo Gentilini was born in Genoa in 1911; from a young age he felt a strong religious vocation that pushed him to enter the cloistered monastery of Pietrasanta, where he stayed for three years, completing philosophical studies, before dedicating himself as a self-taught artist to artistic exploration, which would lead him to exhibit in numerous shows in Italy and abroad.
A man of faith, he believes that only through art can one reach the divine. And this belief will underlie his entire work: "I try to create emptiness – Gentilini declared – This emptiness provokes in me a certain catharsis: I observe sensitive values that I respect, I re-evaluate them, but I never know how I will fall into the painting, and this is the realization of a truth toward a sign never imagined."
He was an artist practicing asceticism, to imitate the Saint to whom he was devoted. The two natures, the human and the aesthetic, coincide perfectly.
