Aldo Gentilini was born in Genoa in 1911; since he was a boy he felt a strong religious vocation that led him to enter the cloistered monastery of Pietrasanta, where he remained three years, undertaking philosophical studies, before devoting himself as a self-taught artist, which would lead him to exhibit in numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad.
A man of faith, he believes that only through art can the divine be reached. And this thought will furnish the backdrop to all his work:
"I try to make emptiness – Gentilini declared – This emptiness provokes in me a certain catharsis: I observe sensitive values that I respect, I re-evaluate them, but I never know how I will fall into the painting, and this is the realization of a truth toward the sign never thought about."
He was an artist practicing asceticism, to imitate the Saint to whom he was devoted. The two natures, that human and that aesthetic, coincide perfectly.
