Aldo Gentilini was born in Genoa in 1911. From a young age he felt a strong religious vocation that led him to enter the cloistered monastery of Pietrasanta, where he stayed for three years, pursuing philosophical studies, before dedicating himself as an autodidact to artistic research, which would lead him to exhibit in numerous shows in Italy and abroad.

A man of faith, he believed that only through art could one reach the divine. This belief underpins his entire body of work:
"I try to create emptiness – Gentilini stated – This emptiness provokes a kind of catharsis in me: I observe sensitive values that I respect, I reassess them, but I never know how I will fall into the painting, and this is the realization of a truth toward the form never imagined."

He was an artist who practiced asceticism, to imitate the Saint to whom he was devoted. The two natures, human and aesthetic, coincide perfectly.
