Bacchus, a 19th‑century classical pencil drawing from Spain, depicting a smiling Bacchus with a naked nymph in a mythological scene, signed by V. Wehrle Anfruns bottom left and in good condition, unframed, measuring 58 cm high by 45.5 cm wide.
Description from the seller
Here is a beautiful large academic fine pencil drawing of a smiling young Bacchus with a naked nymph reclining in front of him, her arm clapsed around his torso while he playfully serves her grapes.
Victor Wehrle Anfruns shows his usual mastery of the human body, light and shade, and effective economy of line. In true 19th century neoclassical style. Signed bottom left: V. Wehrle.
It was part of a large collection of drawings held by the family of the 19th century artist Victor Wehrle Anfruns who studied at and taught at the Escuela de Bellas Artes de Barcelona in the second half of the 19th century. I have discovered that he exhibited in the IV International Exposición de Bellas Artes in 1898, but is described as having submitted another painting 'as a pensioner' in 1906. There are over 500 pieces in the collection, given the numbering on the back of some of the drawings that were later mounted on thin card and were recently sold by the family. Another piece in this collection signed by him is dated 1881. This is number 518. In this case authorship is clear.
In very good condition. The paper has browned with age. The drawing has been partly stuck on the white card.
Sold unframed.
