Description from the seller

Large painting, oil on canvas with mixed media technique, signed on both front and back by the master Antonio Sciacca. The work measures 48 x 68 cm.

Antonio Sciacca was born in Catania on May 13, 1957, where he earned his academic degrees. He graduates with a thesis on Francis Bacon, whom he personally interviews in London, in the artist’s studio. He also becomes acquainted with Alberto Burri, with whom he forms a friendship and regular contact. In 1978 he was selected by the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome for the Glasgow International Art Exhibition. In 1983 art critic Pierre Restany visits his studio in Catania and, interested in the pictorial research Sciacca was pursuing on the “Metamorphoses of the human being,” writes a critical text entitled “Fantasmi Familiari.” In the 1980s Alberico Sala, art critic of Corriere della Sera, writes about him. In the 1990s he founded in Bologna a painter-cultural movement called Metropolism, which addresses contemporary social issues such as consumerism and fashion houses as status symbols. In this movement a group of international artists was involved who exhibited their works in Rome at Spazio Flaminio, with critical writings and the presence of Omar Calabrese, Renato Minore, Alberto Abruzzese, and Valerio Dehò. Among the numerous Metropolism exhibitions, notably the Madrid show (Italian Institute of Culture) in 1995, and the Rome show (Museo del Risorgimento – Vittoriano) in 2000, with a presentation by Achille Bonito Oliva, theorist of the Movement. Another art historian who followed the artist, commenting on some of his solo exhibitions, is Vittorio Sgarbi. Sciacca has taught at the Academy of Fine Arts of Catania and is currently a professor of Painting at the Nike Academy of Art and Restoration in Catania. He lives and works between Catania and Florence.
