Description: a small book (13.5 x 8.5 x 4.5 cm) in Latin with the title Examen Juridicum, an important handbook that explained the foundations of jurisprudence through digests and the codex. Author: the legal scholar Professor Bernardus Schotanus (1598-1652). (edition published after his death)
Contains 1st an engraved title page that shows a legal setting with a professor (on the left) interrogating a group of young jurists, with in the foreground a thick law book. 2nd a title page with the printer’s mark featuring a palm tree, a figure and a lion, surrounded by the motto "Vincit Virtus (Virtue conquers)."
Printer initials HB: Hendrick Theodoor and Dirk Boom, Amsterdam, 1669.
Consisting of: 1 frontispiece (fixed to the detached front binding) on which a handwritten owner note discusses the Frisian jurist Bernardus Schotanus (1598-1652) with a list of the universities where he taught and the books he wrote. / 1 engraved title leaf / 1 printed title page / 3 leaves dedication to Jacobus Oiselius (1631-1686), professor in Groningen / 3 leaves typographi lectori & errata / pages 1 through 766: 7 chapters / 10 leaves index.
