Pair of porcelain amphora vases decorated in polychrome with gilding, made in France, circa 1900–1930; each vase measures 40 cm high, 25 cm wide and 18 cm deep; condition: used with probable small missing pieces and minor wear to gilding, no chips or restorations visible.
Description from the seller
Pair of amphora-shaped vases in polychrome porcelain with gilding.
France, presumably Paris manufacture, late 19th century
Description:
Pair of large amphora-shaped vases with tall independent square bases, made of enameled porcelain and richly hand-decorated, a superb example of the “Neo-Rococo” taste that dominated the commissions of the European upper middle class at the end of the nineteenth century.
The vases are distinguished by the refined chromatic contrast between the glossy black mirror-like ground and the vibrant profusion of bouquets and garlands of multicolored flowers (roses, anemones, dahlias and wild-smilax) that envelop the entire globular body, the neck, and the bases. The painted decoration, clearly of Flemish naturalistic origin, is embellished with minute details in brushed 22-karat gold with sprig motifs and dotted highlights that give extraordinary luminosity to the composition.
Condition:
The objects are in good overall condition. Very slight, physiological wear to the gilding at points of greatest handling and small firing defects in the glaze, consistent with the period and manufacture. No chipping or visible restoration.
