The Essay
In The Essay, the scene does not depict a concert or a culminating moment, but the intimate space where the sound is still being constructed. Two figures confront each other in a proximity charged with tension and complicity, as if the act of playing music were also an exercise in mutual understanding. The guitar, located at the center, functions as a symbolic axis: it does not belong to either one, but to the bond that they try to tune.
The composition, pierced by vibrant planes of color—reds, yellows, and greens—disassembles reality into fragments that do not seek mimesis, but the emotional experience of the moment. The angular forms and broken lines suggest that communication is not fluid, but worked, almost negotiated. In this sense, the essay becomes a metaphor: it is not only about music, but about relationship, listening, and constant adjustment.
Far from the perfection of the final result, the work celebrates the process. Error, repetition, and pursuit are the silent protagonists here. The artist places the viewer in that preceding instant where anything is possible, where harmony does not yet exist but is already hinted at.
The Essay is, in essence, a reflection on the act of building something together: a melody, a conversation, a way of being in the world.
