Description from the seller
Eugène Marcel Mougin (1895-1981)
Architectural Corner with Tower and Houses
Work signed by Eugène Marcel Mougin (1895-1981), depicting an architectural corner of a rural character, with a stone tower or construction as the main element of the composition. The scene shows a set of traditional buildings, vegetation, and a narrow passage between houses, resolved with a very thickly laid and expressive brushwork.
The work is framed within French architectural landscape painting of the 20th century, with a clearly post-impressionist sensibility. Mougin builds the scene through a dense, loose, and textured brushstroke, in which light and texture take on great prominence. The architecture is not treated in a strictly descriptive manner, but is interpreted pictorially through planes of color, luminosity contrasts, and a marked vibrancy of matter.
Stylistically, the painting shows influences of French post-impressionism, especially through the expressive use of color, the simplification of forms, and the importance given to brushwork. The artist works with luminous whites, ochres, greens, earth tones, and light blues, generating a scene of great visual liveliness. The orange-tiled roofs and the light-colored stone of the tower contrast with shadowed areas and vegetation, contributing depth and chromatic balance.
The composition stands out for its dynamism. On the left, wooden structures and shadowed architectural elements create a dark counterpoint against the illuminated tower on the right. The central path guides the gaze toward the background, while the vegetation and the rooftops articulate the scene with a highly attractive visual rhythm. The work conveys a sense of spontaneity and freshness, typical of a painting executed with great technical ease.
It is especially interesting the treatment of the pictorial surface, with visible impastos and broad brushstrokes that reinforce the modern character of the work. The material becomes an essential element of the composition, imparting relief, movement, and a very painterly reading of the architectural landscape.
The work appears signed in the lower right corner. The condition can be seen in the photographs, which are part of the description. It is recommended to carefully review the images to assess the overall condition of the work and the frame.
It is presented framed with a golden and green classic-decorative style frame, in line with the aesthetics of the work. The frame is included as a gift along with the piece.
A work with strong decorative presence and collector’s interest, especially attractive to lovers of 20th-century French landscape painting, rural architectural views, and post-impressionist painting with thick impasto brushwork.
