Antique walnut wood chest dating to the mid-19th century (circa 1830–1850).
Description from the seller
Splendid and imposing antique walnut wood coffer, dating from the mid-19th century (roughly 1830-1850), executed in full Carlo X / Louis-Philippe style. This refined object stands out for its unusually generous dimensions and the substantial weight of 3,100 kg, features that bring it closer to the rare travel safes or private archive chests used in the 19th century to store documents, correspondence and personal valuables.
The structure presents an elegant “sarcophagus” or “pagoda” silhouette, characterized by a domed, flared lid and a solid molded base. On the top there is a mobile metal handle in darkened metal for transport, while on the front the refined original lock mouthpiece stands out, finely worked with delicate floral motifs.
The interior, extraordinarily well preserved, is finished in natural wood exposed to view and is complete with its upper removable tray, divided into three practical compartments. The lid is secured by robust brass hinges and is equipped with a coordinated death-catch chain.
A detail of particular interest is the large brass sprung lock, perfectly functional and complete with its original key, a feature extremely rare and sought after in objects of this period.
Our interior designer/architect recommends: ideal as a decorative element in professional studios, libraries, gentleman’s club environments, elegant country houses or interiors with an English and eclectic taste. Also perfect as a refined scenographic storage for ancient documents, collections, jewelry or desk objects.
The piece is presented in good conservative condition, with a splendid antique patina and light signs of aging consistent with its age, authentic testimony to its history. Structure perfectly solid and sound, with no missing parts.
Dimensions: 46.5 cm x 25 cm x 30 cm
Weight: 3,100 kg
