Neogothic centrepiece from the early 20th century (ca. 1900–1910) in brass with a silvered finish, 28 cm diameter by 5 cm high, originating from France and featuring gargoyle reliefs around the edge in good used condition with minor signs of wear.
Description from the seller
It is a neogothic centerpiece from the early 20th century, a piece that condenses the medievalizing aesthetics so appreciated in Europe at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th, when the Gothic revival became a decorative language loaded with symbolism, drama and craftsmanship. Here the metal — probably an alloy with a dark finish and antique patina — is worked as if it were miniature architecture: every relief, every curve, every motif seems drawn from a temple or a cathedral reinterpreted for the home.
The edge of the dish is etched with gargoyle reliefs, fantastic figures that emerge among scrolls and vegetal motifs, lending visual strength and a protective air. The gargoyles, with their tense faces and compressed bodies, evoke the medieval imagery that the neogothic enthusiastically recovered: creatures that watch, that support, that decorate with a mix of mystery and theatricality. Their presence turns the centerpiece into an almost narrative object, where the ornamentation tells stories.
The interior, smoother and more softly patinated, creates a contrast that enhances the decorated perimeter. That alternation between serene surface and exuberant border is typical of the neogothic applied to domestic objects: a balance between function and fantasy. The piece, heavy and solid, conveys the sense of a ritual object, designed to occupy a central place on a table, sideboard or display cabinet.
It is a centerpiece that combines medieval drama, meticulous craftsmanship, and sculptural presence, perfect for interiors seeking a historical accent with character.
Certified shipping and good packaging.
