Chen Wenling is among the most representative artists of the contemporary Chinese scene. Her research develops primarily through sculpture and installation, but also includes painting, photography, and contemporary calligraphy.
Considered one of the protagonists of contemporary Chinese sculpture, Chen Wenling has built a strongly recognizable language, suspended between realism, imagination, and symbolic dimension. Her works, often characterized by strong expressive intensity and an immediate physical presence, combine irony, emotional tension, and reflection on the contemporary world.
Sometimes defined as a “magical-realistic wizard of sculpture,” the artist is also regarded as a pioneer of large-scale contemporary public sculpture. Through powerful forms, bright colors, and figures with a strong visual impact, Chen Wenling addresses themes related to childhood, memory, desire, social transformation, and the human condition.
Among her best-known series are Red Memory, Happy Life, China Scene, City Bull, and Grace of My Heart, cycles in which the artist has developed a personal imaginary capable of uniting references to Chinese culture, observation of contemporary society, and a deep reflection on individual identity.
Chen Wenling has participated in numerous exhibitions in China and abroad and has repeatedly been recognized among the leading Chinese sculptors of her generation. She was also the first Chinese artist to receive the Public Art Prize at Sculpture by the Sea’s seventh edition in Perth, Australia, also obtaining the honorary title of Chinese-Australian Art Ambassador from the Australian Embassy.
Her works are in important public and institutional collections, including the National Art Museum of China, the CAFA Art Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, the Doosan Art Center, the National Art Gallery of Korea, and the Melbourne Museum.
