Description from the seller
Castle Coraidelstein Wendelin Stahl & Else Harney - Large pink-green vase
Exceptional, large hand-turned and glazed ceramic vase by Wendelin Stahl & Else Harney, circa 1965. The vase is a significant example of West German ceramics of the post-war modern era.
Particularly appealing is the combination of clear, restrained and lively surface design: the body with a narrow spout and two elegant handles is covered by a variegated glaze that, through countless speckles, assumes a strongly plastic, almost mineral-like effect. The vase shows some signs of use on the body and is equipped with rubber feet at the bottom.
The base bears a recessed stamp "Coraidelstein".
Background: Wendelin Stahl met the artist Else Harney (1919-1984) from Wuppertal in his brother’s pottery. The stubborn consul’s daughter, who left a lasting impression in Höhr riding in an open carriage with smoke and large hats, had inherited Burg Coraidelstein in Klotten on the Moselle. Here the two settled in 1952 to run a workshop for utilitarian wares. Like many other potters in post-war West Germany, Harney and Stahl gradually moved away from serial production and began to create unique pieces that quickly attracted great attention among collectors. For their outstanding results both were internationally honored with prizes. No apprentices were taken on any more. Selected students followed, who were taught by the master in making good forms and glazes. Stahl built a wood-fired kiln, which gave the vessels their unmistakable color play, which at the same time also represented an extra risk in production.
