Artist biography:
Marcus de Vestele (1941-2024) is a Belgian artist best known as a sculptor working in marble (Carrara, Bardiglio…), but he also developed a powerful pictorial production that was for a long time confidential and is now highly sought after.
Deeply influenced by the Cobra movement, he creates works that combine spontaneity of the gesture, expressive force, and exploration of organic forms. His inks and washes from the 1970s, like this composition, reveal a more meditative and dramatic aspect of his work, where black and white convey a raw and lyrical energy.
Pieces directly from the studio occupy a unique place in Belgian art of the second half of the 20th century, combining sculptural rigor with pictorial freedom.
