Description from the seller
Archaistic Chinese talisman – Yang Ram, Fu bat and Ruyi Clouds – Prosperity, Longevity and Wish Fulfillment
This remarkable amulet is carved in serpentine group stone, displaying a beautiful antique patina with delicate ivory white, nacreous white and softly amber cream nuances, enhanced by discreet natural inclusions that attest to its authenticity and age.
Finely pierced and high-relief sculpted, this composition draws inspiration from the great models of archaistic Chinese glyptic art. The engraved decors of volutes, spirals, and geometric motifs recall the ornaments of ritual bronzes from ancient dynasties, while its satin polish reveals the stone’s gentleness and depth.
The piece represents a stylized ram (Yang 羊), recognizable by its powerful spiraled horn, paired with a small bat with folded wings (Fu 蝠) delicately integrated into the composition. The whole is enveloped in sacred Ruyi clouds, whose elegant scrolls symbolize heavenly favor and the fulfillment of aspirations.
In Chinese tradition, the ram (Yang) is a powerful symbol of peace, prosperity, gentleness, and benevolence. It is also associated with success, family harmony, and good fortune.
The bat (Fu) holds a privileged place in Chinese iconography. Its name, a homophone of the word meaning “happiness” and “blessing,” makes it one of the oldest talismans of Asia. It is traditionally invoked to attract luck, protection, and heavenly benefits.
The Ruyi clouds, ubiquitous in imperial Chinese art, represent wish fulfillment, enduring prosperity, and divine favor. The term Ruyi literally means “as you wish,” making this motif a symbol of success and harmony.
The combination of these three symbols gives this amulet a strong spiritual dimension: it becomes a true talisman designed to attract happiness, prosperity, longevity, and protection.
Through its archaistic style, its finely pierced sculpture, its balanced aesthetics, and the softness of its patina, this piece evokes works inspired by the artistic traditions of ancient China, where benevolent animals and celestial motifs were united to form objects of prestige as well as protection.
An elegant, refined, and deeply symbolic piece, ideal for collectors of Asian art, enthusiasts of ancient jades, or lovers of Chinese civilization.
