The book was written in Aegina in 1941, originally titled The Synaxari of Zorba. Its final form was completed in 1943. The Life and State of Alexis Zorba is one of Nikos Kazantzakis’ best-known and perhaps most beloved novels, first published in Athens in 1946. It is based on the life of George Zorba. The fictional “Alexis Zorba” was a real person who first met Kazantzakis on Mount Athos in 1914, where they became friends. In 1917, Kazantzakis signed a lease for a mine in Prastova, Mani, and hired George Zorba as his main collaborator.
