Description from the seller
Deluxe large format edition with the famous illustrations by Paul Gustave Doré. Although the edition appeared a year earlier in London by Sampson Low than in New York, Doré's designs—twenty-four full-page illustrations and two vignettes—were engraved in New York by an exceptional group of wood engravers: Frederick Juengling, to whom three plates and the vignette of the title page are due; Richard G. Tietze, author of three other engravings; H. Claudius, who engraved three of the designs plus another in collaboration with G. J. Buechner; W. Zimmermann, engraver of four plates; R. Staudenbaur, who signs three; F. S. King, present with two; and T. Johnson, Frank French, R. Schelling (Johannes “John” Rudolph Schelling), George Kruell, Robert Hoskin, Victor Bernstrom, and Richard A. Muller, to whom an engraving is due each. Let's also add Elihu Vedder's design for the title page, only in the American edition: a bust of Pallas that shelters the portraits of Poe and Doré.
It includes ‘Comment on the Poem’ by Edmund C. Stedman.
Olive colored decorated cloth with Dora Wheeler Keith design (winged figure holding a lighted candle and a key); design, letters and edges in gilt.
