Original Dutch sand-casting mould for producing Zaanse clock bells, built with a wooden base and tin form parts, dating from 1930–1940, with dimensions 54 cm high, 29 cm wide and 7 cm deep, in good used condition with light signs of age and stains.
Description from the seller
A special and rarely offered piece of Dutch craftsmanship: an original casting mold for producing bells for Zaanse clocks. This sturdy mold is built from a wooden base with tin forming parts and was used in traditional sand casting. The mold was pressed into molding sand, after which the resulting cavity was filled with molten metal, such as bronze, brass, or tin. After cooling, the characteristic clock bell was produced, finished, and mounted on a Zaanse wall clock.
Producing clock bells demanded a great deal of skill. The shape of the bell determined not only the appearance but also affected the sound. Such casting molds were reused for many years within foundries and specialized workshops. Due to their intensive use, only a few examples have been preserved, making original molds like this today extremely scarce.
The Zaanse clock is among the best-known Dutch clock types and was produced from the late 17th century onward. The especially richly decorated pieces with cast bells are characteristic of Dutch clockmaking craftsmanship. Research into authentic Zaanse clocks and their production shows how important this artisanal tradition has been in Dutch horology history.
This casting mold is not only a fascinating tool but also a decorative object that makes the history of the clockmaking profession tangible. A wonderful collectible for lovers of antique tools, foundry history, industrial heritage, or Dutch clocks.
