Description from the seller

The Annunciation of the Virgin, painted in egg tempera on a wooden panel with a gilded background. A work of the traditional Russian school of the 20th century, characterized by a vivid color palette and a classical composition typical of Orthodox iconography.

Archangel Gabriel, with large multicolored wings ranging from deep blue to brown, presents himself to the Virgin kneeling on a green suppedaneo. He wears a light blue-green tunic with gilded details and in his left hand holds the traditional scroll (symbol of the divine message). The face, with delicate and youthful features, is framed by red curls and a golden halo.

The Virgin Mary sits on a richly decorated throne, beneath a canopy supported by twisted columns and crowned by a red drapery. She wears a dark brown robe with a maphorion (veil) on her head and crosses her hands on her chest in a sign of humble acceptance. She is also surrounded by a golden halo.

The architectural background, with stylized buildings and details in blue, green, and gold, recalls the classical representations of Russian icons of the period. In the upper left, the ecclesiastical Slavic inscription reads: «ОБРАЗЪ» (Obraz).

- Technique: egg tempera on panel prepared with a gilded background
- Period: 20th century
