Description from the seller
Magnificent and rare pebble vase (or spike-flower gourde) in chamotté stoneware, created by the famous French ceramicist Jacques POUCHAIN (1927-2015) in Dieulefit, emblematic of 1960s/1970s modernist design and ceramics.
This unique piece perfectly expresses the artist's quest for balance between organic forms and geometry. It features a remarkable asymmetrical work with a double opening at the top.
Face A: A complex and graphic decoration of geometric incisions in an ethnically/cubist style, filled with a milky and crackled white glaze.
Face B: A clean, smooth, satin surface covered with a brown iron glaze (Tenmoku-type) with deep metallic reflections, subtly revealing pyrites and the raw texture of the earth.
Signature:
The piece bears at its base the interlaced monogram "JP", carved in a very fluid and cursive manner directly from the core of the mass, a signature characteristic of the artist on his finest stoneware pieces.
