About the artist

Carlos José Fonseca Martins (Tavira, 1949) is a Portuguese visual artist whose career spans painting, printmaking, sculpture and ceramics. Since 1981 he has also been active as an art professor, contributing to the training of several generations of artists.

Throughout his career he has participated in numerous solo and collective exhibitions in Portugal and abroad, including the I Andalusia and Algarve Art Biennial, the Tokyo Cultural Center (Japan), the EuroART Biennial of Barcelona, the Coruche Biennial, as well as exhibitions in Germany and in various Portuguese galleries. He was also the artist who inaugurated the Palácio da Galeria de Tavira, now the Municipal Museum.

His work is part of public and private collections in Portugal, Spain, Germany, Europe, the United States and the United Arab Emirates, as well as institutional collections such as BES, CCA and ENING. In 2016 he was awarded the Medal of Merit – Bronze Grade by the Tavira City Council and, in 2018, received the Medal of Artistic Merit – Silver Grade awarded by the town of Santa Luzia.

Among his public works stand out the ceramic tile monument at Rotunda Copeijo, in Tavira, as well as works acquired by institutions such as the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Tavira and the Tavira City Hall, now integrated into public collections.
