ARTIST BIOGRAPHY
Born in Barcelona in 1952, he belongs to the generation that fostered the cultural transition in Spain resulting from the shift from dictatorship to democracy that occurred in the mid-1970s. He played a leading role in the original comics movement that began in the early 1980s and was the founder of emblematic magazines such as Star and Cairo. In his early years as an artist he was perceived as a cultural agitator, and throughout his career he has shown his works in galleries located in Spain and France, being well known among the specialized circles of Europe and the United States.
Like the artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, such as Sorolla, Zuloaga, Vázquez Díaz or Picasso, he works on his country’s culture and fully trusts in the relevance of the España brand.
Delving into details, he left the University in 1972 to found what would become the first underground comics magazine in the Spanish state, Star. A author of several comic albums, magazines and a collaborator of radio programs when presenting sound cartoons, he dedicated himself to comics from 1972 to 1989. In 1989 he began painting thanks to Art Supermarket. In 1992 he settled with his family in Vigneux de Bretagne, France. His first exhibition in Madrid in 1995, where he presented themes that seduce you, Bulls and popular Madrid. In 1999 he settled with his family in Villanueva de la Cañada, Madrid. He collaborated with the newspaper ABC from 1989 to 2002, won the Max Award for Performing Arts in 1999, author of posters, lithographs, serigraphs, performances and numerous exhibitions. In 1995 he presented his Taurine work for the first time at the Jorge Alcolea Gallery in Madrid. He has published 10 albums, the latest “Idyll, Fortuny’s Notes” in 2017, published by the Prado Museum. In 2012 he drew and wrote “Speak Low,” his first graphic novel. In 2017, the Prado Museum published his book “Idyll” and exhibited his work in Spain’s most visited museum. In October 2019 he painted live before spectators a large work measuring 300 x 1000 cm at the National Museum of Catalonia (MNAC), in Barcelona.
Interested in Urban Landscapes, Bullfighting and Portraits. To date, Montesol’s works are present in art markets and among collectors in Europe, the United States and the Middle East.
