Carl Price – Die Seiltänzer des Carl Price, a single placard from Breslau (1845), measuring 44 x 37 cm and in good condition.
Description from the seller
Seiltänzer. - Seventh mime-acrobatic performance of Carl Price with his company, in 6 divisions. Breslau, January 2 (handwritten addition:) 1845. With 2 wood engravings. One-sheet print. 44 x 37 cm.
Carl Price (born 1803) descended from the great English troupe of equestrian performers that went to Scandinavia around 1785. Some descendants are still traceable in the 20th century as circus performers. Carl Price’s wife hailed from the even older and more prominent French circus family Franconi. - The poster lists the individual performances to be expected: initially four different rope performances, followed by dances of John Price’s children, the brothers Johannowitsch will “produce extraordinary feats” (likely the two black-ground woodcuts showing two half-naked men in a strength act), finally a theatrical piece is also performed. The troupe apparently consisted almost exclusively of members of the Price family, and besides John (Johann) are named: Wilhelm, Victoire, Hanna (Hanne Sophie Price; 1833-1905, famous as a ballet dancer), Clara, Rosa (Rosetta Sophie Caroline Lewin; 1810-1887), Louis, Elise and Ferdinand. - With a slight horizontal crease. Good copy!
