Description from the seller
A Matched Set of original 1930's Golf Clubs by Sid Roper.
A very rare matched set of Sid Roper 1930's golf clubs contained in a classic 1950's golf bag by Lilywhites of Piccadilly, London.
The clubs are right handed and comprise of numbers 1 and 3 solid persimmon woods with alloy base plates together with a set of irons numbered 2 to 8 plus a number 9 being the putter. Each club bears the signature of Sid Roper. All clubs are fitted with their original leather wrap around grips secured with waxed bindings. The shafts are pyratone in construction and are stamped True Temper. Together with patent numbers and are "Medium" flex. The iron heads are stamped "Hand Forged" "Rustless" and were probably forged in Scotland. The faces being "punched" designs.
The bag is from a slightly later period, probably 1950's and was made by Spalding for Lilywhites of Picadilly.
Condition of the clubs and bag is very good. Only minor signs of age and wear. A few of the leather grips have moved slightly revealing the underbinding. All zips work on the bag.
Sid Roper was a Midlands (UK) golf professional in the mid war years. He qualified and played in the 1937 Open Golf Championship at Carnoustie, Scotland.
I have extensively researched Sid Roper clubs and failed to find another set. As these clubs were found in Nottingham (UK) and Sid Roper was from this part of the country it is possible that these were the clubs that he played with in the Open Championship at Carnoustie in 1937.
