Description from the seller
Original Vintage Travel Poster - Holland-Afrika Lijn - Reyn Dirksen - ca. 1955
Description (Dutch)
Beautiful and iconic original vintage advertising poster for the Holland-Afrika Line, designed by the well-known Dutch graphic designer Reyn Dirksen (1924-1999) around 1955.
This poster was issued on behalf of N.V. Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaartmaatschappij. The design is a splendid example of postwar Dutch graphic design: it features the imposing, stylized bow of an ocean liner in deep blue and black tones, with below it a contrasting world map in green and yellow on which the routes to the African continent and Australia are clearly indicated.
Specifications:
Designer: Reyn Dirksen (signed in the printing at the bottom right)
Year: ca. 1955
Print: Original litho / steendruk
Dimensions: ca. 62 x 100 cm
Publisher: N.V. Vereenigde Nederlandsche Scheepvaartmaatschappij
Condition (B / Good vintage state):
The poster is in good, authentic condition with fresh and vivid colors. The paper shows the normal, charming signs of aging that accompany a poster of more than 70 years old. There are two notable signs of use (see detail photos):
A small nibble/damage with minimal paper loss on the left edge.
A few very light, superficial scuff marks/ink wear in the blue-green background area.
Both marks occur exclusively in the neutral background portions and do not detract from the powerful central image (the ship and the world map). Ideally suited for professional framing (possibly with a matte), making the edge damage almost invisible.
A beautiful and rare collectible for enthusiasts of maritime history, vintage travel posters, and Mid-Century Dutch Design!
