A.R. Penck (1939-2017)
The German painter, sculptor, musician and writer A.R. Penck, born Ralf Winkler in 1939 in Dresden, worked in East Berlin in the divided Germany at first. Penck’s pictures are inspired by prehistoric art and are characterized by the use of pictorial language elements such as stick figures, signs and symbols.
Penck is also regarded as the father of the "New Wild", a movement of the early 1980s with an ironic and provocative aesthetics.
The multiple participant in Documenta exhibitions and recipient of numerous art prizes, his works are represented in many important collections around the world, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam.
