Italian School, 18th century – Biblical scene, ink on laid paper, Italy, 15 × 18 cm, in good condition.
Description from the seller
Fine old drawing representing a scene depicted in a vast interior of monumental character, with imposing architecture and many figures arranged on different planes.
The composition is built around monumental architecture, animated by several figures. The pen and brown wash treatment combines a free, nervous line with wash highlights that reinforce volumes, shadows and the depth of space.
The sheet presents stylistic characteristics close to Italian drawings of the early 18th century, notably in the treatment of architecture, figures and in the expressive use of wash.
The graphic handling can notably be linked to the vocabulary of Giovanni Antonio Pellegrini (1675–1741). This proximity is offered for stylistic purposes and does not constitute a definitive attribution to the artist.
The drawing is executed with a pen, brown ink and brown wash on laid paper.
The sheet measures 15 × 18 cm and is historically mounted flat on a thicker paper.
Provenance: private collection, Cannes region (Alpes-Maritimes), France. Acquired directly from the collector.
Condition: good overall for its age. The sheet is historically mounted flat on a thicker paper. An old restoration is visible in the lower right part of the drawing. The photographs show the current state of the work.
