Description from the seller
Photograph of Marc Simon
Portrait of the sculptor Cesar at his home
Color print in 30 x 40 format
Marc Simon is an important figure in French press photography, better known as a photo editor and head of the photo department at VSD than as an author-photographer.
Career
From 2000 to 2018, Marc Simon directed the photo department of the magazine VSD, where he supervised the selection, editing and publication of numerous photographic reports. In this position, he contributed to the magazine’s visual identity, prioritizing demanding photojournalism, centered on the strength of storytelling through images.
After leaving VSD, he continued his work in the world of photography as:
- president of the jury of the Mark Grosset–SAIF Prize of Promenades Photographiques;
- secretary-general of the Centre International de Recherche de l’Imagerie Politique (CIRIP);
- member of the board of Promenades Photographiques and speaker in photography education.
His work as a photographer
Marc Simon also produced reports for VSD, including portraits of personalities and current affairs subjects. Some of his photographs are today offered on the collectors’ market. Among them is a silver gelatin print made in 1984 depicting Serge Gainsbourg and Jane Birkin aboard the frigate Guépratte during a report for VSD.
Importance
If Marc Simon is less known to the general public than some press photographers, he played a major role in the diffusion of documentary photography in France. His influence comes as much from his work as a photographer as from his role as an editor, having mentored several generations of photojournalists and helped make VSD one of the leading French illustrated magazines from the 1980s to 2010.
