Splendid oil painting with an orientalist aesthetic that meticulously and exotically recreates the intimacy of a harem.

The composition is dominated in the foreground by a young, elegant woman dressed in rich traditional North African/Ottoman attire, wearing a transparent veil and golden jewelry, holding a traditional string instrument (tanbur or Oriental lute). Mariano Montoya was born in 1950 in Tomelloso (Ciudad Real), a land with a notable artistic tradition.

Primarily self-taught, he stood out from the outset for innate technical virtuosity, a clean brushstroke, and an extraordinary ability in drawing and academic composition.

Throughout his career he has skillfully cultivated figurative painting, particularly in the Orientalist genre, 18th-century gallant scenes, traditional genre scenes, and depictions of majo figures and carnival scenes.

His Orientalist work is closely connected to the aesthetic tradition of the 19th and early 20th centuries, characterized by meticulous detailing, careful archaeological and textile recreation of garments, tapestries, and carpets, as well as an outstanding command of transparencies, glazes, and chiaroscuro.

Reserved by nature and distant from mass promotional circuits, Montoya focused his career on the rigor of the studio and selective production.

His paintings are common and highly valued on the secondary market and in Spanish and international auction rooms (such as Durán, Subastas Segre, Aletheia, or Templum Fine Art), where his large Orientalist canvases and period scenes achieve notable recognition for their decorative value and refined technical quality.
