Work description:
With “Blumengruß” Peter Robert Keil presents a cheerful and color-intensive interpretation of the classical still-life of flowers. Instead of a naturalistic depiction, he transforms the flowers into expressive, almost playful figures full of personality and energy.
Two large-format blossoms – one in luminous yellow, the other in vivid blue – rise from a striking violet vase. The black contours give the shapes a clear structure, while the intensely red background makes the colors seem to glow. The simplified language of form and the spontaneous application of color make the work immediately recognizable as a typical Keil.
Although the motif may appear simple at first glance, the strong color contrast and dynamic line work create a surprising liveliness. The flowers almost seem like two characters in dialogue, lending the painting an optimistic, life-affirming radiance.
The richly decorated original gold frame further underscores the decorative effect and creates an appealing contrast between classical framing and modern expressive painting.
The composition exudes joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy – a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically gifted mother struggled with her son in the final phase of the war as they made their way to West Berlin, where they settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting – particularly in expressionist artists and the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him initial craftsmanship and painting techniques.
