Description of the work:
With “Elvis Presley” Peter Robert Keil once again engages one of the greatest icons of popular culture. Unlike his expressive Elvis portrait from the early 1980s, this work shows a clearly reduced and matured pictorial language that is characteristic of his works around the year 2000.
The face is structured into bold areas of color in violet, green and warm orange and held together by striking black contours. The famous tuft makes Elvis instantly recognizable, while the cigarette in the corner of the mouth underlines the rebellious character and the legendary coolness of the “King of Rock ’n’ Roll.”
The light background directs the gaze entirely to the face and enhances the presence of the figure. Despite the simplified form language, Keil manages to capture personality, expression, and dynamism with a few sure brushstrokes.
The work merges music history, pop culture, and neo-expressionism into an impressive portrait that convinces both artistically and decoratively.
The composition exudes joie de vivre, directness, and artistic immediacy – a tribute to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically gifted mother fought her way with her son to West Berlin in the final phase of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting – especially in expressionist artists and the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, from East Berlin, became his mentor around 1954 and taught him his first craft skills and painting techniques.
