Description of the work:
With “Georg Baselitz,” Peter Robert Keil pays homage to one of the most important German contemporary artists. The work is far more than a portrait—it is a pictorial dialogue between two formative representatives of German neo-expressionism.
Keil reduces Baselitz to distinctive facial features and transforms them into a powerful composition of bright yellow, intense pink, rich blue, and fresh green. The characteristic long nose forms the vertical axis of the image, while the clearly outlined eyes meet the viewer directly. The bold black lines structure the face and give the work the spontaneous energy that characterizes Peter Robert Keil’s painting.
Particularly striking is the color division of the face. Different color fields merge into an expressive unity and give the portrait emotional depth that goes far beyond a mere outward portrayal. The lively, striped clothing creates an exciting contrast to the calm gray background and enhances the monumental presence of the figure.
The painting unites the handwriting of two exceptional artistic personalities and stands as an example of Keil’s engagement with the icons of the international art world.
The composition exudes joie de vivre, immediacy, and artistic spontaneity—a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically gifted mother struggled with her son in the final phase of the war to reach West Berlin, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting—especially in expressionist artists as well as in the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who came from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him his first craft skills and painting techniques.
