Description from the seller
Ferdin Rubens – Large Antique Carpenter’s Chisel – Germany – ca. 1880–1920 – 42 cm
This impressive and exceptionally large antique carpenter’s chisel was manufactured by the renowned German toolmaker Ferdin Rubens (Ferdinand Rubens), one of the respected names in the German woodworking tool industry of the late 19th and early 20th century.
Based in Wuppertal-Elberfeld and Hagen, Ferdinand Rubens produced high-quality woodworking tools made from Cast Steel, intended for professional carpenters, cabinetmakers and joiners. The company was also known for manufacturing ice skates, but its chisels remain among the most sought-after pieces by collectors of historic woodworking tools.
This example measures an impressive 42 cm in length and is fitted with its original turned hardwood handle (approx. 6 cm in diameter). The blade bears the original Ferdin Rubens maker’s stamp, confirming its authenticity.
Its substantial dimensions indicate that it was designed for heavy-duty carpentry and traditional timber construction. Today, it is not only a functional antique tool but also an attractive collector’s item and decorative workshop piece.
Condition
* Original antique condition
* Clearly stamped Ferdin Rubens maker’s mark
* Beautiful dark age-related patina
* Honest signs of professional use consistent with age
* Original hardwood handle in solid condition
* Light surface oxidation and sharpening marks
Dimensions
* Length: 42 cm
* Handle diameter: Approx. 6 cm
A rare and authentic example of German craftsmanship from the golden age of European toolmaking. An excellent addition to any collection of antique woodworking tools or industrial antiques.
