Robert Rauschenberg had early contact with choreographers and composers, and the creative inspiration arising from these friendships produced art that perhaps had the greatest influence on pop art.

From 1953 to 1955 he used unusual objects, from radios to mounted birds, to create special works that he called 'Combine Painting', in other words the integration of objects into artworks. Around 1960 he began using silkscreens to make works that depicted important contemporary subjects, usually American and largely political in nature. Rauschenberg’s work is associated with cubism and dadaism.

His art was positive, a 'art of uplift and joy' or the expression of a gentle irony towards the American way of life. Rauschenberg said: 'My works have the value of reality. Once perspective was a reality. Today we know it as an illusion. In the same way my Combine Paintings are reality.'

Reservoir is regarded as a masterpiece with a place in the history of contemporary art. The work introduces objects and everyday items to express the consumerism of modern society, one of the central themes of pop art.

The original artwork is located in the National Museum of American Art, Smithsonian, Washington, D.C., USA.
