Statue - Virgin and Child - 41 cm - Plaster - 1920-1930

Superb and expressive vintage religious statue in polychrome plaster, depicting the Madonna and Child, dating from the mid-20th century.

This sculpture stands out for the dynamism of its lines and its resolutely Baroque aesthetic. Mary is represented standing, fervently bearing the Infant Jesus against her. The swirling movement and draped cloak, with the reverses painted in a deep carmine red, inject a sense of life and lightness into the whole composition. The robe and veil feature a trompe-l'œil patina in ochre and olive green tones that strikingly imitate the veins and warmth of a wood sculpture.

The molding and manual finishing work are of beautiful finesse, particularly visible in the serene, contemplative features of the Virgin with half-closed eyes, as well as in the curly hair of the Infant Jesus. The group rests on an integrated rectangular base.
