Description from the seller
Decorative frieze (cimasa) in solid carved hardwood, originally intended for the upper finish of furniture (wardrobes, dressers) or overdoors. The carving features ornamental motifs typical of the late 19th-century historicist style/early 20th century, characterized by a central shell (rocaille) flanked by symmetrical scrolls and stylized foliage motifs.
The finish was applied with a dark stain and a subsequent protective polish, which emphasizes the depth of the reliefs. The back of the object is flat and unworked, prepared for wall mounting or for attachment to furniture.
