Popping up from the raging waves, jaws agape and bristling with teeth, the sea monster flies at a terrified lifeboat of castaways, beneath a stormy sky pierced by a beam of divine light. The cartouche bears the signature « メドサン » (Medsan).

The visual force of the composition lies in its perfect imitation of a 19th-century wood engraving: tight hatching, stark blacks and whites, burin-worked foam, a dramatic sky worthy of Bible illustrations or Doré’s The Inferno from Dante. The antiquated craftsmanship gives the scene a romantic intensity and an epic sweep.
