With this vertical-format artwork, Medsan portrays Tanjiro Kamado, the hero of Demon Slayer (Kimetsu no Yaiba), in the style of an ancient ukiyo-e print. Sword drawn and a green checkered haori, the young demon slayer bounds across a plain of tall grasses, displaying his Water Breathing in a stylized wave, while Mount Fuji rises on the horizon. The red cartouche bears his name and the signature is inscribed in the masters’ engravers’ style.

The visual force of the composition lies in its traditional print language: clean ink lines, delicate flat tones, clouds and waves with curves inherited from Hokusai and Hiroshige, the grain of aged paper, and calligraphic cartouches. The modern anime character integrates perfectly into the Edo woodblock print vocabulary.
